I felt 🗲struck🗲 when it was said that one of the obstacles that makes learning harder is distractions. This could not be a truer and more prevalent scenario that describes my life. It is like one thing after the other distracting me and holding me back. Some of these things I can control and some I cannot.
Another point made in these slides that really hit me was the topic of “being cut out for science.” And that being “cut out” is just a load of crap💩. This honestly really settles and encourages me. Because sometimes, I just get down on myself. My goal in life is to be a veterinarian. And during some hard classes, I just feel like I am not good enough or smart enough to be in the science field. My passion for science didn’t start until college. When I was in high school, I did not enjoy science🔬; In fact, it was my lowest scoring section on the ACT. So I just had it in my head that I was not cut-out. Now, I am a senior in college, earning my bachelors in Biology and I am looking forward to my future. And hearing this helps me through, when I think different. I learned that positive motivation and positive engagement are going to be very important in my success and that my negative motivation (more specific towards me is anxiety) will be my competitor. Yes, I will probably have to practice more than others. But that doesn’t mean I can’t do it. Dr. Oakley struggled all throughout high school in her science and math courses. Eventually, after some self-discovering, she was able to find her way. And that’s what I hope for. Below is a picture of my 3 babies and my inspiration to be a vet. My cat is not pictured.

  1. Hi Kaelyn, your dogs are very cute (hi pibb). Having a passion for science can be hard to describe, I find myself having that issue when people ask me why I chose to study what I am. I am not sure one actual event set me on the path to medical school but I also can't see myself doing anything else in the future. Majoring in science has been one of the most grueling experiences and has tested my mental capabilities on more than one occasions. We both just have to work harder than others to get what we want, and that IS OKAY. You've got this, you will succeed in your life and all of this hardship will have been worth it. Keep your head high and your dreams big! :)
