August 24- Evolutionary Beginnings

Fitness is measured by the number of production of offspring. The more offspring produced, the fitter that species is. If a species is not able to successfully produce and raise offspring, they are less fit. A common misconception of fitness is that it has to do with an animal’s physicality; How strong they are, how much muscle they have, or how powerful. Basically, it was thought of as “how well do this animal/species survive. These traits do NOT determine fitness. But, they can play a role in an animal’s increased fitness.

I was mildly aware that there were two scales of evolution. But I have never learned or been taught in depth about it. Short time frames and long time frames. To me, yes- These make sense. Because like it was said in the video, there are some forms of evolution that we will be able to experience and see in our lifetimes. And then there are forms that we never saw and will never even be close to seeing. These events I feel should be separated into macro and micro. It just makes sense because these evolutionary events are not the same type of events. While keeping in mind they piggy-back 🐷 on each other.

Evolution Talk- “Shorthand in science can lead to misconceptions” was a pretty cool quote I thought to begin the topic of Survival of the Fittest. Because this really is true. There are so many misconceptions in science, and it starts with the trivial things. And I also had no idea that Charles Darwin was not the one who “coined” “Survival of the Fittest.” I feel bad for Herbert Spencer; I had no idea who he was😢. He has NOT received the credit he deserves. I also feel this video was just a strewn out description of fitness. It is good for people who maybe have never learned about fitness.

  1. I too found the quote "Shorthand in science can lead to misconceptions" profound. I am glad someone else mentioned it.

  2. Hi Kaelyn! I loved your blog post and loved the picture that you used to represent fitness! I think this picture is a great representation of fitness and is easy to understand. I also loved that you pointed out that "shorthand in science can lead to misconceptions" because I also thought that it was a very interesting and important part about the Evolution Talk. Who knew that Darwin has been getting credit this whole time and "survival of the fittest" and it wasn't even his?? I have always been taught that it was Darwins work and listening to Evolution Talk was the first time I have ever heard otherwise! I loved your blog and hope you have a great semester!

  3. Hello Kaelyn, I really love the way you present your blog! It immediately stood out to me before even reading your post how well organized and present your materials are through the font, colors, highlights, emojis, and diagram. I will definitely be taking some notes from yours to make mine a little bit more visually appealing! I never thought about feeling bad for Herbert Spencer until you said it but jeez you're right! That would really stink to have came up with a phrase that everyone knows or has heard of and not get any of the credit!
